How to use it

Where this sound came from
Slowing records down is not a TikTok invention. DJ Screw was doing it in Houston in the early nineties, dragging tapes down to a crawl and creating the chopped and screwed style that shaped a generation of southern rap. Vaporwave picked the idea up in the 2010s and pointed it at old pop and lounge music. The specific "slowed + reverb" version, a normal song, slowed maybe fifteen percent, drowned in room reverb, posted as a whole track. Spread through SoundCloud and YouTube around 2016 and then became one of the default ways short-form video sets a mood.
What all of these share is that the pitch drops. That is the point. A voice pitched down a couple of semitones sounds heavier, more tired, further away. The reverb does the rest of the work, pushing the recording out of your headphones and into a room you are standing at the back of. Together they turn a song you know into something that sounds remembered rather than played.
What the controls do to the audio
Speed here is a genuine playback-rate change, the same operation as a turntable running slow. At 0.85x every frequency in the recording drops to 85% of where it was, which is a fall of about 2.8 semitones, a bit less than a minor third. At 0.8x it is roughly 3.9 semitones, near a major third. Nothing is stretched or reconstructed, so there are no processing artefacts at all; it is simply a lower, longer version of the same file.
The reverb is convolution. A short burst of decaying, gradually darkening noise stands in for the impulse response of a room, and every sample of your song is smeared through it. Mix sets how much of that wet signal is blended back with the dry track. 20% is a suggestion of space, 45% is properly cavernous. Tail length sets how long the room keeps ringing after a sound stops. Long tails suit slow, sparse songs; anything busy needs a short one or the reverb from one bar will still be audible over the next.
Getting one that sounds good, not just slow
The most common mistake is treating both controls as "more is better". Reverb past about 45% stops sounding atmospheric and starts sounding like a bad room recording, because the consonants that carry the words get buried under the tail. If the vocal is losing intelligibility, pull the mix down before you pull the speed up. The slowdown is doing the heavy lifting and the reverb is there to support it.
Slowed audio also comes out quieter, partly because the reverb spreads energy across time. If the result feels weak next to the original, run it through the normalizer afterwards rather than reaching for more effect. And render with the preview before you commit: a setting that sounds perfect over the intro is frequently too much once the full arrangement arrives.
