How to use it
- Drop the track in. Nothing is uploaded and there is nothing to download first — this is ordinary arithmetic, not a model, so it starts working immediately.
- Read the key. You get the name musicians use, the Camelot code DJ software wants, and a confidence figure.
- Check the second-place key when confidence is low. Some music genuinely sits between two readings, and the tool says so rather than picking one and sounding certain.
- Look at the note chart underneath if something seems off. It shows which notes the track actually spends its time on, which usually explains the answer immediately.
What a key actually is
A key is not a property of any single sound; it is a pattern of expectation built up over time. When a piece keeps returning to the same note, and the chords around it keep resolving toward that note, listeners come to hear it as home. Everything else is heard in relation to it — some notes as stable, some as leaning, some as clearly outside.
That is why key detection works by counting rather than by listening for anything in particular. A piece in D major spends more time on D, F♯ and A than on anything else, not because the composer decided to but because that is what being in D major consists of. Add up which notes a recording dwells on and the shape of the key falls out of the total.
Why relative keys are genuinely ambiguous
C major and A minor use exactly the same seven notes. Not similar notes — the same ones. Any method that works by counting note occurrences therefore cannot tell them apart, because there is nothing to count that differs.
What separates them is where the music rests: which chord it starts on, which one it ends on, which one feels like arrival. That is a matter of structure and timing rather than of pitch content, and it is why a low confidence figure here is honest rather than evasive. The reference profiles help, because listeners do weight the tonic and the third differently in major and minor, but on music that hovers between the two the margin is small and this tool says so.
Getting a reliable reading
Analyse a section rather than a whole track when the piece modulates. A song that starts in E minor and lifts to F♯ minor for the last chorus has no single key, and averaging the two produces an answer belonging to neither. Trim to one section and run it again.
If the track is mostly percussion, take the part with the most tonal content. Drums are broadband noise and contribute roughly equally to every note bucket, which flattens the profile and leaves less for the correlation to work with.
For a track with a strong vocal over a sparse arrangement, running the acapella extractor first and analysing the backing can help — a lead vocal slides between pitches far more than an instrument does, and that smearing shows up in the note profile as energy on notes nobody actually played.
