How to use it
- Drop the song onto the page. It is decoded in the tab, so there is no upload, no queue and no watermark on the way out.
- Leave the rate at 1.25x for the classic sound, or pick Subtle or Hyper. The readout tells you how far the pitch has moved and how long the track will run.

Where nightcore came from
The name belongs to a Norwegian duo. In 2002 two students, Thomas S. Nilsen and Steffen Ojala Søderholm, put together a project called Nightcore and released a set of eurodance tracks they had sped up and pitched up. It was a school assignment as much as a release. The files circulated, the idea outlived the project, and by the late 2000s "nightcore" had stopped meaning that duo and started meaning the treatment itself: take a song, run it roughly a quarter faster, let the voices climb, upload it over a still image.
For a long stretch of YouTube history that was one of the most reliably popular things you could post. The conventions hardened, anime artwork, a static frame, the full track rather than an excerpt, and the sound spread well past the eurodance it started with. The recent wave of official "sped up" versions on streaming services is the same operation with the dial turned down and a mastering engineer involved.
Why speeding up raises the pitch
A recording is a list of sample values plus a rate at which to read them back. Read the list faster and every waveform cycle completes sooner, so every frequency in the file rises by exactly the same ratio. This is not a side effect to be corrected; it is what a record played at the wrong speed has always done, and it is the entire sound of nightcore.
The amount is easy to work out. Pitch is logarithmic, so the rise in semitones is twelve times the base-two logarithm of the rate. At 1.15x that is about 2.4 semitones. At 1.25x it is 3.9, a shade under a major third. At 1.4x it is 5.8, most of a perfect fourth. Doubling the speed would be a full octave, which is why anything past about 1.5x stops sounding like a faster version of the song and starts sounding like a different recording altogether.
The other thing that moves is the formants, the fixed resonances of the singer's throat and mouth that tell your ear how big the person is. In a real voice those stay put when the note changes. Here they climb with everything else, and your ear reads the result as a smaller, younger singer. That impression is a large part of why the style reads the way it does, and it is exactly what a pitch-preserving stretch would remove.
Choosing a rate
Start at 1.25x. It is the centre of the tradition and it works on most material without any thought. Move down towards 1.15x when the vocal is already high or the song is busy, because both make the effect land harder than the number suggests. Move up towards 1.4x for a track that was slow to begin with, or when you want the result to be unmistakably processed.
Two things go wrong at high rates. The bass thins out, because the kick and the low synths move up into the range where they have less weight, and the percussion starts to sound brittle as cymbals shift into the top of the spectrum. If a track sounds thin at 1.4x, come back to 1.3x and add a little low end with the bass booster rather than fighting it here.
